Much of this research focuses on the interplay between research and policy. Matthew has consulted or undertaken research on behalf of numerous organizations, including Communities and Local Government (CLG), Home Office, Government Social Research Unit, Government Office for Yorkshire and The Humber, Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), Institute of Community Cohesion (iCoCo), North West Improvement Network (NWIN), Young Foundation, ConservativeHome, European Muslim Research Centre (EMRC), Greater Manchester Police (GMP), Rotherham Partnership, Burnley Borough Council, Calderdale Council, Leicester City Council, Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council, Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council, Wigan Council and Swindon Borough Council, among others.

Reflective of this interest in bridging the gap between research, policy and practice, Matthew organizes and convenes the Challenges to Cohesion Conference, an annual event that brings together academics, policy-makers and practitioners from across England to discuss some of the wider evidence base and public policy implications.
